Lee, Won-Soo and Park, Mok-Wol is the representative poets who established the concept of children’s poetry in 1950s and 1960s and lead it. Until now, these two poets’ concepts has been regarded as a dichotomy between realism and the theory of childlike innocence. However, this kind of dichotomous approach cannot explain clearly their concepts of children’s poetry, and make them misunderstood in some points. In this thesis, I examined their concepts of children’s poetry with applying M.H. Abrams’ theory to free from the dichotomous structure.
According to M.H. Abrams theory, Lee, Won-Soo can be specified as pragmatic theories, and Park, Mok-Wol as expressive theories. Lee, Won-Soo developed his concept of children’s poetry with focusing children as readers, and Park, Mok-Wol did it with focusing writers. So, when they defined children’s poetry, Lee, Won-Soo pointed out ‘to be read by children,’ and Park, Mok-Wol ‘to be written by childlike innocence.’ The same insistences carried out when they separated children’s song and children’s poetry. For the writing theory, Lee, Won-Soo said children only need to represent naturally without any techniques, but Park, Mok-Wol build up his theory very precisely to children and grown-up writers.
The two poets’ concepts of children’s poetry could be evaluated as realism and theory of childlike innocence, and these two trends are firmly continued until now. But the two trends sometimes split children’s literature field and disturb communication.
The new point of view on the concept of children’s poetry of Lee, Won-Soo and Park, Mok-Wol can reveal the original meaning of them in detail. And, we also expect that the two concepts would affect each other and develop a new horizon in the children’s literature fields.
