Recently, much attention to regeneration of inner city have been paid instead of new town or outer city development in Korea. It has resulted from inner city decline problems with urban blights based on physical deterioration as well as economic decline in the city as a whole. Such decline problems have been more critical to local cities due to ageing society and population decrease.
To solve these problems the Minister of Land Transport and Maritime affairs(MLTM) launched the Korea Urban Renaissance Center(KURC) for national research and project to establish urban regeneration policies and strategies. The KURC started regeneration research projects to explore existing techniques in developing countries and to identify applicable techniques to Korean cities. The national project, called as ‘Construction & Transportation 7 R&D’, includes essential policies and strategies to implement the regeneration techniques and to select regeneration model cities in terms of ‘test bed’, supervised by governmental organizations.
The purpose of this study is to suggest the direction of future urban regeneration projects through an analysis of the types of urban regeneration projects implemented by local governments in Korea and exploring the process of ‘the urban regeneration test-bed project’. For the study, we reviewed related documents and literature on urban regeneration, development strategies and implementation processes. Also we analyzed applicable strategies to the cities selected as ‘test-bed’.
Finally, according to the analysis result, we suggest some suitable strategies based on future policy guidelines of the test bed cities as reference model cities for successful regeneration in local cities.
