This paper investigates Martin Bucer’s Christology in his early thought. It is for him important that Jesus Christ is the Mediator between God and men. In this connection his focus is more on the work than on the person of Jesus Christ. Bucer places the redemptive work of Christ in the great framework of the history of salvation which encompasses the ages from creation to consummation, In his first publication already Bucer speaks of the work Christ in the sense that He restores all things.
We do indeed encounter the idea of the threefold office(munus triplex) in Bucer, but we cannot say it plays an important role. He put greater stress on Christ’s twofold office as Mediator. But for him the main accent lies on Christ’s royal office as Mediator.
Christ is the King of kings, the supreme Priest, and chief of prophets. Christ is the Logos by whom all things are created. For that reason all things in the whole world have to do with in a way with Christ.
Christ’s suffering and death are described as satisfaction, for thus the justice of God demanded, or as appeasement and expiation. Christ is Lord. To Bucer this means that in his kingdom Christ, by His Spirit and by the faith of the Gospel, rules the world, the church, and the hearts of the elect, justifying and redeeming them.
All Christian are priests. They are spiritual. If they do not have the Holy Spirit, then they are not His. The foundation for the priesthood of all believers lies in Christology, but in Pneumatology we find the stimulus.
