In the late 15th century, the reign of King Seongjong (成宗), A new group of intellectuals called Sarimpa (士林派) appeared. They traced their academic origin from the late Koryo dynasty. As a result, they founded Dotong (道統), the genealogy of their school from Jeong-Mongju (鄭夢周) succeded by Gil-Jae (吉再), Kim-Sukja (金叔玆), Kim-Jongjik (金宗直). The Confucian scholars embraced Dotong unsderstood the ideas and studies of Chosun dynasty with Sarimpa as the center.
Recently, it is generally accepted that Guanhakpa (官學派) was the main stream of Confucianism of the early Chosun dynasty. However, there are an opinion that there were a group of Confucian scholars called Jeoleuipa (節義派) from the beginning of Chosun Dynasty. Jeoleuipa was different with Guanhakpa in the aspects of academic traditions and the style of a writing. The scholars succeeding Jeoleuipa became Sarimpa, and made confrontation with Hungupa politically and academically.
This paper is about the advent of Sarimpa in the late 15th century. The this writer tried to explain the cause of the appearance of Sarimpa from the political situation and changes of that time not from the genealogy of them. The reign of king Sejo ( ), Guanhakpa changed to Hungupa 世祖 (勳舊派). Guanhakpa had put emphasis on the word ‘Jeoleui (節義)’, which means integrity and loyalty. Guanhakpa adopted Jeoleui as the ethics of government official. However, in the process of King Sejo’s accession Guanhakpa abandoned the value of Jeoleui themselves so that they couldn’t emphasize Jeoleui anymore.
A new group of Confucian scholars appeared in the reign of King Seongjong. They advocated the value of Jeoleui and confronted with Hungupa. They asserted the necessity of studying Dohak (道學) and tried to establish the genealogy. They chose Jeong-Mongju and Gil-Jae as their pioneers. Both Jeong-Mongju and Gil-Jae were the renowned scholars resisted establishment of Chosun dynasty and put Jeoleui into practice by death. And Gil-Jae was teacher of Kim-Sukja whose son was Kim-Jongjik, the leader of Sarimpa. Although Jeong-Mongju and Gil-Jae had week relationship with each other, Sarimpa connected them in the genealogy in the aspect of practicing Jeoleui.
At this point, Dotong, the genealogy of Sarimpa didn’t reflect the advance of Sarimpa’s ideas and studies but was established from the reinterpretation of Jeong-Mongju and Gil-Jae. It has to be said that Sarimpa set up Jeong-Mongju and Gil-Jae as their pioneers ex post facto.
