The shipping link between Taiwan and Mainland China is always a hot issue among shipping circle. Although some loosened measures have been adopted to allow partial direct or indirect shipping links, the major direct shipping across the Taiwan Straits is still prohibited. On March 22, 2008, Taiwan will hold the presidential election. The current two presidential candidates raised their politics for future direct shipping of the Straits respectively. The development of the cross-Straits shipping after presidential election needs further observation. This paper will analyze the current measures for cross-Straits shipping. Furthermore the key issues to be resolved for direct shipping negotiation shall be examined in details. In addition, the politics of presidential candidates for future direct shipping shall be analyzed. Finally, the trend and development of the cross-Straits shipping after presidential election will be assessed.
