The 16th century European reformation should be considered as a reformation occurring in the given historical context of the then European Christian oikoumene as well reinvestigated by a group of revisionists, it is undeniably a special set of historical events distinguishable from other historical cases which altogether can be included into the common and universal theme of the Reformation. At the same, the European reformation is still a typical representation of the Reformation, the quest of which is to be seen in any case of the pursuit of the Church as the Body of Christ; even beyond the category of the church history, the theme of reformation is embedded throughout the history of salvation. This article is a thematic reflection of the European reformation as an initiative movement toward the origin of the Christian community, i.e., ‘ad fontes escclesiae’, which is a sequence of the biblical humanism as the christian application of the academic and educational slogan of the Renaissance humanism, i.e., the pursuit of ‘ad fontes’. Here, the socio-political character of the European reformation betrays a conflict between the Word of God and the Church. The Genevan reform programme as the second generation of the 16th century reformation is understood as an ecclesiastical output which hinges on the dilemma between the Word of God and the Body of Christ, the two pillars of the Christian orthodoxy, and also reviewed as a fruit of the tension, functioning as a sound balance between them, and successful inheritance of successive tradition of the reformation as is represented by the quest, ‘ecclesia reformata semper reformanda est.’
