Addressing how futurity is realized in Korean, this study intends to support- the modality thesis, which. explains temporality by means of modality. In the absence of much research attention on the relationship between futurity and modality compared to that devoted to the modality markers themselves, this study aims to demonstrate that futurity in Korean is closely intertwined with modality such as intention, conjecture, obligation or plan. The expressions used to import futurity in Korean include -keyss, -l kes, -l yeyceng, and -(un)n. They are usually viewed to be modality markers in the literature, the meanings of which are argued to be ambiguous among various modality senses. While acknowledging the contribution previous research has made to the understanding of modality markers, this paper aims to address the unanswered questions including how the futurity is realized by ordinary speakers and in what way futurity and modality are connected. In a bid to answer these questions, language data collected from. authentic corpora are analyzed. The analysis of the collected data reveals that futurity is expressed by means of modality senses, thus supporting the modality thesis, which views futurity as supervenient on modality.
