Research considering religion as the main determinant of FDI is very scarce since it has been not in domain of business and economic study. In using U.S. manufacturing multinational corporations (MNCs) , FDI for 50 countries over the time periods 2001, 2003, and 2005, this study investigates the effect of religious regulation of the host country on U.S. manufacturing FDI. In controlling for other economic and non-economic possible factors, the empirical findings show that the effect of government regulation of religion in the host country is negative and significant with U.S. manufacturing FDI, and that the effect of social regulation of religion is negative but not significant in using both regulation indices. This study examines the role of religion to attract FDI by focusing on the impact of social and government regulation of religion on the FDI of U.S. manufacturing MNCs. Even though only U.S. FDI was used to find the impact of religious regulation in this study, this study provides one evident strategic implication meaning that MNCs should consider religious regulation imposed from government in order to invest in foreign areas.
