Large scale model tests were carried out to investigate load transfer mechanisms and to consider the behavior of earth pressure in segmental retaining walls which have reinforcement with extensional geogrid and non reinforcement. Static and dynamic loading on model tests were performed using a full scale model wall that involves an earth retaining wall fully reinforced with geogrid. The reinforcement samples were 2.6 m high, 5.0 m wide, and 6.0 m long. The reinforced retaining walls were also tested for comparison by no reinforcement. The test results showed that the measurements of earth pressure at the fully reinforced retaining wall were different from those for the partly reinforced retaining wall. The analyses of these results suggest that the use of geogrid reduced vertical earth pressure. The use of reinforced retaining structure for railway roadbed is therefore recommended.
