This paper aims for the solution of some problems on English There-constructions: the property of an expletive ‘there’ which only functions as a subject, not a substantial subject, and the definite NP following ‘be’, an existential verb. These problems will be dealt with split projections with Park (1996) which argues that the functional category (CP, TP, or DP) can have an optional rule, Outer Spec-Head Agreement(OSHA) as well as Spec-Head Agreement(SHA). Throughout this paper, we show that English ‘there’ constructions can be analyzed consistently with Park (1996)’s split projections in the functional categories, TP and DP.
