The study is to investigate the significance of publishing Seonwon-gyebo-giryak and the genealogy consciousness represented in the preface and postscript of it. Since Taizong, dynasty genealogy had been published divided into three kinds: Seonwon-rok, Jongchin-rok, Youbu-rok. However, in Sukjong’s reign, there occurred one problem that the names and the pedigree of the members could not be identified even though they had been in the same royal family, because it was published separately according to how the relationship with the King was. To solve this problem, Nangwongun made Seonwon-gyebo-giryak which integrated the three separate genealogies.
Seonwon-gyebo-giryak was amended for 114 times, the causes of which were described in the 69 postscripts. But, there are several postscripts that were not included, one of which is the postscript Song Siyeol wrote. It was not included since the postscript was written after the book was already published.
The purpose of publishing Seonwon-gyebo-giryak was to establish the legitimacy of the succession to the throne, which was shown in the postcripts written in the reign of from Sukjong to Jeongjo. However, since Sunjo’s reign, this purpose had become vague. The change was recognized that the kings who were succeeded respected the forefathers of kings and queens with filial affection.
