Bidens pilosa, also called Spanish needles, originates from South America. It ha been used as a medicinal plant in many regions of world, where roots, leaves and seed have been reported to possess numerous beneficial effects upon the human body. Bidens pilosa was brought to our attention due to its anti-inflammatory properties. We sought the opportunity to develop a unique blend of herbals containing leave and stem of Bidens pilosa that aims to reduce allergic symptoms. To achieve this goal, a systematic screening strategy including mechanism of action specific bioassays and in vivo models was used. During the early development, lgE-R expression, lgE secretion, and histamine release assays were used as ingredient and formula screening tools. The potential formulas were further tested in humans using skin prick and nasal challenge models to determine efficacy. A consumer use response study was also conducted to confirm the formula efficacy. Overall, this strategy was successful in identification of efficacious ingredients towards the development of herbal formulas. The combination of Bidens pilosa, cinnamon extract, and acerola cherry concentrate demonstrated the ability to support cleat nasal passages.
