Collection of honey has been a traditional occupation of the tribals and forest dwellers. There are many tribal families who have honey hunting as their profession. The Rock bee (Apis dorsata) colonies are generally found on the rock cliffs or on the large trees. Apis dorsata laboriosa, the Himalayan honey bee, is the world s largest honey bee; single adults can measure up to 3.0㎝ (1.2 in) in length. Before 1980, Apis dorsata laboriosa was considered to be a subspecies of the widespread Apis dorsata, the giant honey bee, but in 1980 and for almost 20 years thereafter it was elevated to the rank of a separate species. It is now classified once again as a subspecies of Apis dorsata (Engel, 1999). It is highly adapted to its highland habitat in behavior and there has evidently been little gene flow between it and lowland A. dorsata for millions of years; some consider this evidence that it should be classified as a species (Arias and Sheppard, 2005).The method of honey hunting varies according to the nature of the support; number of colonies in aggregation or singly. There are many traditional methods that are followed in different regions for honey harvesting. In Karnataka major honey flow is in the Western Ghats region and malnad region (comprising of Hassan, Chickmagalur, Coorg and Shimoga districts) The hunters sing songs at various stages of the harvest. There appears to be a basic text formula, which is sung in 5 stages: (1) finishing the ladder; (2) clearing the bees from the nest; (3) cutting the comb; (4) hoisting the basket; and (5) descending the ladder. The songs pass from fathers to sons and are sung to the spirits of the trees to make them friendly. The songs are humorous and tease the crowd below, who respond with a whoop. Often honey is mentioned in reference to a women or young girl’s beauty and their sexual attractiveness. Local and regional politics can also receive mention in the spontaneous lyrics of the creative singers/honey hunters (Anonymous 1996, Dunselman 1959, and de Vries 1994).Studying about the traditional methods, the customs & religious beliefs of the people in these regions is of utmost importance in the light of advancement in the field of science & technology.
