This article analyzes thirty years’ research trends in Korean Social History Association
from a perspective of sociology of knowledge and historical sociology. If a particular
knowledge is constructed at the intersection of its own intellectual lineage and social
background, how can studies in Korean social history that pursued sociology contextualized
within Korean history be evaluated? This article approaches a historical sociology of Korean
social history from two narratives of transition and translation. Through a transition narrative,
this article shows the way the history of Korean social history consciously and unconsciously
has reflected changes in social background. Through a narrative of translation, it also reveals
that indigenous problematics of non-Western societies have found their possibility of
discursivity with the help of translated concepts and theories. In advance of the analysis of
the history of Korean social history, as an analytical framework of transition, object of
comparison, and object of translation, this article starts with a brief introduction of the
history of the US historical sociology and social history. Then it examines research trends of
the official journal"s 561 articles published until 2009, classifying them into five categories of
(1) macro and micro history, (2) social history and cultural history, (3) eleven research
topics, (4) unit of analysis, and (5) period of analysis. Through a transition narrative, this
article argues that the research trends have been circumscribed by epistemological horizon
created by changes of social context from peripheral Fordism to flexible accumulation. Also,
through a translation narrative, it points out that the history of Korean social history has
implied the ambivalence of both intellectual colonization and indigenous appropriation.
