This article presents an analysis on the properties of the Mazu with the changing circumstances of the times, with focus on the official recognition of the Mazu belief. The research presented this article provides a critical view to the mainstream discourse under the aegis of the authorities. This is part of a critical examination of culture, especially Mazu boom in China today.
Mazu was originally a woman who lived in Fujian during the early Song dynasty. After her death, she became a goddess of the sea. Mazu, who was once the female shaman, came to be equated with Tian Hou(Heavenly Empress) in obtaining ‘official recognition’. Besides, starting from Fujian, worship of Mazu spread to the whole country. In the process of obtaining ‘official recognition’, Mazu was functioning as a national ideology. Also, the same mechanism is still functioning nowadays.
Mazu is obtaining a new form of ‘official recognition’ in the 21st century. The Mazu belief and custom was designated as ‘World Intangible Cultural Heritage’ by UNESCO. We can say that Mazu became China"s national brand. She does play an important role as a brand in all areas including culture, politics and economy. Mazu has become a symbol of national integration and evolved into a goddess of peace. She’s been co-opted and harnessed for political and economic ends by the authorities. But eventually, the true soul of Mazu can exist in the mind of the people who pray for health, happiness and peace.
