Using the 7th Korean General Social Survey (KGSS) in 2009, this paper presents statistical analyses on how perceptions regarding income inequality in Korea influence life-satisfaction among Korean. It is found that a substantial number of Koreans thinks the income gaps and conflicts between the rich and the poor in Korea are serious and that these perceptions exert a strong negative influence on their life-satisfaction. In particular, it is found that the negative effect that perceptions regarding conflicts between the rich and the poor have on life-satisfaction varies depending on respondents’ income level and political ideology: the negative effect becomes more salient among those who with lower levels of family income and among ideological moderates. This paper concludes with discussing the implication that these findings have with respect to current controversies on welfare policies in Korean politics.
