Lee, Eun-Joo. The Archetype of Mother in The Cryptogram and Jolly. The New Studies of English Language & Literature 49 (2011): 133-152. The focus of this study is an analysis of the maternal figures in David Mamet plays, The Cryptogram and Jolly, based on the archetypal mother in Erich Neumann’s The Great Mother. The Great Mother has three forms: the Good Mother, the Terrible Mother, and the Good-Terrible Mother. Donny, as mother in The Cryptogram, plays the part of the Good-Terrible Mother, though more emphasis is placed on the role of the Terrible Mother. Jolly’s mother in the play, Jolly, displays negative attributes. She thus exemplifies the Terrible Mother, in Neumann’s terms. Jolly as the mother of two daughters in Jolly, shows positive characteristics, those of the Good Mother. Still, she suffers from the indelible scars of the past, caused by child abuse from her mother. On the whole, it can be concluded that the playwright still tends to be negative or misogynistic toward women, including mothers. (Sungkyul University)
