Kim, Kyeong-Sik. The Artistic Synthesis of the Issues of Woman and Community: On the Dual Structure of Cousin Phillis. The New Studies of English Language & Literature 49 (2011): 1-27. This paper examines how Elizabeth Gaskell accomplishes the artistic synthesis of the problems of woman and community. The writer aims to achieve the inclusion of the displaced and marginalized including women’s sexual self and neglected members of community. The narrator, Paul, provides his own fantasy about Phillis’s situation but readers recognize the discrepancy between his account and her real status. Both of Paul and Phillis can recognize her sexual self through the Palimpsest, Dante’s Inferno inset with Holdsworth’s handwriting. On the other hand, the characteristics of Owenite community found in Hope Farm make us feel the power, autonomy and self-reliance of the community as a whole, based on the communal production and consumption. Holman, the symbolic father of the community, needs to be changed to embrace the half-wit of the community, Timothy Cooper and Phillis’s sexual self. Gaskell accomplishes the artistic synthesis by representing the characters of Minister Holman and Holdsworth closely connected with both the problems of woman and community while she adopts Paul as a narrator providing unique perspective on them.
