Report Errors
This study aims to examine discourse trends about traditions in Korean design. Further, this study examines books containing the views of each researcher, articles reported in design magazines, and academic essays announced at conferences. The conclusions of this study are as follows.
Firstly, most design researchers merely assert the appropriateness of the modernization of traditional aesthetics; as a result, they have not developed design knowledge into a practical stage. Secondly, they have not connected the results of traditional aesthetics with design-related knowledge such as design philosophy, design methodology, and modeling principles. Thirdly, designers’ practical usage of the traditions has a tendency to repeat the visual appearances of traditions. Finally, since around 2000, the discourse on Korean traditions has faded away and the discourse on Asian aesthetics has become active.
The characteristics of these researches show that design researchers had the intention of studying traditions, but the results of their researches indicate a lack of concreteness and thus are unable to be applied to the fields of design practice. In other words, Korean design does not establish Korean design principles, design elements, and aesthetics with the requisite replicability, universality, and science which would enable them to be applied to educational sites and industrial sites of design. The aim of this study is to suggest a fundamentally alternative perspective of creative resources in the modern design atmosphere by using the aesthetics and formativeness of Korean traditional objects.
