Since independence from Spain until the end of the 20th century, the Hispano-American elite cannon represents a challenge to the region’s cultural diversity because this canon is based upon the ideals of exclusion and discrimination. The evolution of these ideas is a dialectical and historical process in which social groups once excluded are successively included in the elites’ discourses and imaginaries. Sometimes progress in gaining acceptance results from the resistance and struggle carried out by marginalized groups, whereas in other cases the elites themselves integrate them as a method to perpetuate control over society. This essay focuses on the great challenge that the Hispano-American thinking represents to cultural diversity and to the democratization of the region.
