The purpose of this study is to examine the properties of English middles and the constraints on English middle formation. In this study, I investigate affectedness constraint, aspectual constraint and causativity constraint, and points out the problems with them. I also examine the general characteristics of the subject of the middle, implicit argument and genericity. In addition, I present semantic-pragmatic constraint on the middle formation as follows: the middle can not be allowed if the event which it describes is more dependent on the agent than the subject which is non-agent argument. This study shows that this constraint is more adequate than the previous constraints mentioned above in explaining the acceptability of the middle formation.
