This study was to examine the causative factors of family violence in married couples who were at the risk of family dissolution in a local community. The subjects in this study were 392 people, composed of 65 abusers and 64 victims, and 135 husbands and 128 wives from nonabusive families. After 219 items were initially selected, a exploratory factor analysis was carried out, resulting in 8 factors and 42 items: neglect of family (5 items), sexual neglect (7 items), drinking habits (4 items), dysfunctional communication (8 items), obsession over the spouse (4 items), child problems (3 items), adultery (7 items), and conflicts with family members (4 items). There were similarities as well as broad differences between the findings of this study and those of earlier studies. Adultery, drinking and dysfunctional communication on which earlier studies put consistent stress were identified as major causative factors of violence in this study as well. But sexual neglect, neglect of family, child problems and conflicts with family members to which earlier studies didn't pay a lot of attention were found to be as integral factors in this study. On the contrary, all the psychological factors such as personality that earlier studies focused on as the causes of family violence weren't considered to be influential in this study, with the exception of obsession.
