Han-um showed his literary talent from the beginning, and it matured through his habit of voracious reading. Though not many of his writings survive, what we do have seem to show that he put more emphasis on putting his metaphysical studies into practice than on organizing his own ideas on theoretical metaphysics. Therefore, it seems quite right to say that he did not try to set up his own metaphysical theory through his essays and poetry, but expressed his thoughts and feelings in them. His works have three characteristics:
The first one is the true mind of a faithful subject of the king. As he told it himself, he insisted that one should not think much of what others say or think about those that had something to do with the national interests and carry one’s points with faithfulness. This was reflected in his poetry and essays.
The second one is his love of people. Taking piety on people who suffered from wars, starvation, epidemics, and the despotism of the gentry and the public servants, he suggested concrete methods for giving relief to them. This was also reflected in his works.
The third one is his ability to have a peaceful mind by the rivers and lakes. Except in his later life, he was too busy taking care of government businesses to have his own leisure time. However, whenever he had any opportunities to have leisure once in a while he enjoyed it fully and expressed it in his poetry. An example is from his later life, when he requested Park Inro to write a poem, Sajegok, which allowed Haneum to enjoy his life and natural environment in Yongjin.
