Hong, Kyeong-Mo was a person who tried to maintain the family glory that his grandfather Hong, Yang-Ho had built. Above all he admired his grandfather Hong, Yang-Ho best. Government official post for forty-years, going china twice, and showing off her grandfather’s literal ability and relationship with his grandfather’s friends during China visiting showed his desire that he want to hand down his grandfather’s learning and his prestige and to role model his grandfather.
His desire to keep the family formality was justly consequence going In gear with the late Chosun period’s social changes. After Japanese’ invasion Chosun’s society tried to defend the chaos through reinforcing law-following order. So, in the late Chosun times, villages which were gathered with relative-centered same families were formed. And publishing clan register was activated. That was the time when one’s parent’s home was put more importance on than one’s wife’s family. Especially after the death of King Jeong-Jo a faction politics crashed and politics based on exert-powered lineage family rose up, therefore consciousness about one’s family rose more. His family was not the one that could seize power, so that was the time when thinking to glorify his family through scholarship and ideology rose.
He was influenced by his grandfather, and going to China twice influenced his own writings about historiography. He posed open studying attitude by accepting ‘so-ron’ system as well as ‘nam-in’ system. This means that he was influenced by his grandfather, Hong, Yang-Ho, who was very positive to accept a range of scholarship.
He had cognition about ancient history related with ‘nam-in’ system, and that was the effect of his grandfather’s historic and geographical understandings. He had a very independent opinion about ancient country’s border. But he didn’t finish his work only by in handing down his family-inherited learning, but escalated and deepened the historic and geographical understandings by way of independency and eternity of Korean history. He also focused on a historical investigation and an argument and had accepting attitude toward Buddhism. That might be the result of early-nineteenth century central academic circle’s atmosphere.
