A ‘Father’ has been used as a code to read the society and the history since the modern society. A father had an inviolable power for the conservative times when ‘the home’ was equal to ‘the county’. However, the authority had totally collapsed with the Confucian system when it came to the modern China facing its unstable existence.
There were too many ‘delinquent’ fathers all over. They appeared as various types in apocalyptic novels like sorts of ‘譴責小說’ and in ‘五四’ new literature represented by 巴金(BaJin) ‘激流三部曲’ etc and were criticized by the younger generation.
It’s a new situation that the history didn’t experience previously. Still a ‘Father’ is a main topic of discussion even though 100 years have passed by. Even in 2005 which marked the centenary of chinese cinema, the movies attracted interest from art circles which based on conflicts between fathers and their offspring. This article explores a father’s image with ‘Sunflower’ by Zhang Yang(張揚) as a main text and intends to study the meaning of the fatherhood he established in current Chinese society.
