This study tests the effect of an awareness-raising strategy in pitch change on comprehensibility, nativeness, and the production of sentence stress. Subjects were 10 intermediate-level Korean English learners. Three native speaker raters rated the comprehensibility and nativeness of the recorded sentences before and after a 15 week pronunciation course in which the strategy of awareness-raising in pitch change is applied to. The production of sentence stress was calculated using acoustic measurement of frequency of a stressed syllable of content and function words in sentences. The results show that regardless of sentence length, there are significant differences in learners' pronunciation on both comprehensibility and nativeness judgements, and that the production of sentence stress is important for comprehensibility. These suggest that the strategy helps Korean English learners perceive pitch as a phoneme, and that the training of sentence stress is important for Korean English learners for their utterances to be easily comprehended by listeners.
