The purpose of this study is to propose shroud types best appropriate for the modern times. For the purpose, this researcher conducted a questionnaire survey of Korean consumers aged 20 or over in order to determine their view of afterlife and their perception and preference about shrouds. Findings of the study are summarized as follows. The subjects' view of afterlife could be classified into five types, or extinction, rebirth, the world beyond, the celestial world and the heaven/purgatory/hell. Moat of the respondents belonged to the first type. The subjects were significantly different from each other in the view of afterlife in accordance with age, monthly income and religion. How much the subjects feel shrouds necessary was examined in accordance with their view of afterlife to find that they were mostly positive about the necessity of shrouds. Out of these respondents who agreed on the usefulness of shrouds mostly said that when the dead leaves this real world, he should be properly dressed up with a shroud Irrespective of their view of afterlife, the surveyed consumers mostly responded that there's no correlation between shrouds and religious rites that aim to guide the soul of the deal to the heaven. Most of the consumers moderately acknowledged that dressing the dead with a shroud considering his view of afterlife is to show courtesy towards the deceased. And though different from each other in the view of afterlife, the subjects most preferred the ordinary type of shroud.
