The purpose of this paper is two-fold: First, we reexamine the recent development of the clausal structure in the framework of the generative grammar, in particular the Split-CP hypothesis, and the validity of the so-called Doubly-Filled COMP Filter. Then, we offer an analysis of the data from Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales under this Split CP hypothesis. We show that this hypothesis cannot provide an appropriate analysis of the given data and that it only trades off the burden of explanation on a simply different mechanism in this particular set of data. Our alternative proposal is that CP may or may not be split but the optional existence of the complementizer that should be explained in terms of its functional/pragmatic role of marking a tensed clause. We show that the doubly-filled Comps found in The Canterbury Tales are, in fact, purely phonologically optional and not the bundle of different feature sets.
