August 29th 2010 was the 100th anniversary of Gyeongsul-Gukchi[庚戌國恥] or Korea-Japan Annexation[韓日合邦](Japan-Korea Amalgamation[日韓倂合]). 19th century and 20th century were the age of founding colonies and wars for the possession(World Wars) by imperialism.
There are many studies of the thought of Dong-hak, focusing on the Gap-o Peasant War, 'Innaecheon' and 'Cheokwoecheokyang'. About the thought of Dong-hak and the Gap-o Peasant War, Philosophers focused on 'Innaecheon', historians focused on nature of modern and national movement and political scientists focused on nationalism and civil rights thought.
The social positions whose lead the Gap-o Peasant War with Dong-hak believers are ruined yangbans, yangban's child of a concubine, the middle class ―official interpreters, minor offcials, etc., peasants and the lowest class―servants or buchers. Jeon, Bong-jun understanded Dong-hak and used of Dong-hak for peasant war, but he wasn't a Dong-hak believer.
The Dong-hak Peasant War was ended in failure and resulted in countless casualties by foreign forces of Qing dynasty and Japan those were requested by some of reactionary politicians in the government. Nevertheless, the influence and modernity of the thought of Dong-hak and the Gap-o Peasant War remind us that when the country, nation and each one's life are facing a critical situation, we should practice resolutely.
The thought of Dong-hak succeeded to thoughts of Kang, Jeung-san who emphasized thoughts of coexistence and Hucheongaebyuk[後天開闢] for overcoming the crisis of modern civilization, such as the age of limitless competition and conflict. The peasant war in 1894 developed into The Gap-o reformation, Hwalbindang[活貧黨]'s struggle, righteous armies, March 1st Independence Movement in 1919, June 10th Independence Movement in 1926 and armed struggle of independence.
Park, Eun-sik who was a scholar of Wang Yangming's philosophy, a philosopher of enlightenment, a independence movement activist and the 2nd president of the government-in-exile based in Shanghai estimated the Dong-hak Peasant War as "Our common people revolution"
