At the time of liberation, 'Oriental medicine' was still considered to be 'non-scientific,' compared to Western medicine. The Korean practitioners of Oriental medicine had to overcome such preconceptions, and the most effective way to do so was to bring Oriental medicine into the realm of 'science.' Everyone involved accepted the fact that without a scientific reconstruction of the entire system of Oriental medicine, it would neither survive, much less further develop. Yet people differed in their opinions, regarding how to "scientize" the Oriental medicine in Korea.
Some people suggested that the components of herbs be analyzed with chemical methods. Yet such approach was criticised as denying the very essence and merits of Oriental medicine as a form of medicine at all.
Some other people argued that the theories of Oriental medicine should be grasped and identified first. They suggested that the entire process and outcomes of the Oriental medicinal treatments should be critically reviewed from the viewpoint of Western medicine. This argument recognized the unique elements of Oriental medicinal theories that were different in nature from those of the Western medicine. However, this argument as well tended to employ Western medicine as the only viable criterium for analysis and reviews.
The last group of people regarded Western medicine as merely 'one of many' criteria, rather than taking it as the sole criterium that could be used in evaluating all kinds of medicine. This argument suggested that Western medicine be employed as an important criteria in, for example, the 'systematization' of Oriental medicine. It acknowledged and emphasized the unique identity of Oriental medicinal theories that could not be understood by only consulting Western medicine.
