Gy?lryong is a special unit of the Royal Guards(禁軍, Geumgun) during the Koryo. Originally during the Koryo, kings were supposed to be guarded by two military armies called Eungyanggun(鷹揚軍) and Yonghogun(龍虎軍). As seen in the decree issued by King J?ngjong(靖宗, r.1034~1046) in 1045, Gunbansijok(軍班氏族), hereditary soldier class who supplemented the personnel for the two military armies, gradually collapsed. It resulted in problems in guarding a king. Besides, a coup d’etat occurred in 1095 to oust King H?njong(獻宗, r.1093~1095), and his uncle King Sukjong(肅宗, r. 1095~1105) ascended the throne. Under the circumstances, Gy?lryong, a new unit to guard the king, was established by King Sukjong.
Gy?lryong consisted of military officers equipped with martial arts from the central military forces centering on 2 armies. As they belonged to the military service system, Gy?lryong naturally held the military official title. Then Gy?lryong played an important role in guarding the king instead of the central military forces. Accordingly, Gy?lryong was taken as meaning the duty of a pertinent official. In the meantime, the military official title was appointed based on personnel document forms called Bi (批) and Pan(判) whereas Gy?lryong was designated by general executive order form called S?nji (宣旨).
Gy?lryong was effective in some respects. First, the Koryo was able to have elite soldiers form Gy?lryong and guard the royal family. Second, as a small number of elite soldiers guarded the royal family, the political and social status of Gy?lryong was naturally elevated, and it was recognized as a key post. Third, the government was able to save money by making the most of existing excellent soldiers without making a new investment in advancing the king’s guards.
