This paper is devoted to the imitation modeling (simulation) issues ? an actual trend in designing of ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) network. Actual problems and their approaches of modeling ATM networks have been shown in the paper. In this paper we describe the use of the OPNET simulation tool for modeling and analysis of packet data networks such as ATM. We model a simple ATM network and measure its performance under various ATM service categories. We discuss several architectural issues and implementation details. We also present simulation scenarios based on various traffic types, applications, and so on. Our goal is to use the OPNET simulation tool to verify the interoperability of ATM QoS service categories. The modes is available from the OPNET IT Guru Academic Edition version 9.1.
