This paper aims to show the present research status of the urban history in Korea and to present future subjects. I divide the studies on medieval cities into three distinctive topics and the examine the trends and contents of them.
The first topic is the origin and character of medieval cities. Henri Pirenne, the famous and highly influential historian, insisted the tenth-century revival of trade explain the renaissance of urban life. And he thought that medieval cities shook the feudal system and established a sort of liberal and democratic government. But many Korean historians have abandoned his thesis. Recent researches on medieval urban origin stress the continuity of settlement between the Roman and medieval because some roman cities were still functioning in the early Middle Ages. And Recent work has shown that the development of countryside and local trade was important in the formation of medieval cities. In conclusion, recent researches have modified and nuanced the interpretations of Pirenne concerning the urban origin. On the other hand, it has traditionally been told that medieval cities of Europe were free. But as research on Western and Oriental cities proceeds, the credibility of this old proportion is all the more dwindling. In general the liberty which cities have acquired from their lords were, in fact, a mere privilege.
The second topic is economic life in the medieval cities. Recent research on this topic tires to refute the conventional opinion that the cotton products began to witness a great success in 17th and 18th century Europe. Many medieval documents show that the cotton products were consumed on a massive scale already in the Later Middle Ages. Besides, many korean historians have paid attention to the guilds and Hanseatic League.
The third topic is the changes of cities in the in the Late Middle Ages. some Korean historian pay attention to the urban rebellions. They insist that those urban uprising need to be understand as a consecutive and dynamic process of the interaction between state and society rather than the by-product of the misery of the time known as the general crisis or the repetitive resistance to the pressure of the growing state.
