The purpose of this study is to examine variation aspects of Korean noun-final consonants and find out potential factors on their variations.
In order to meet the goal, this study sought to describe optional substitutions shown synchronically in words including Korean noun-final consonants like ‘ㅋ, ㅍ, ㅌ, ㅈ and ㅊ’, and employ diachronic information, if necessary, to discover certain tendency and causality of the optional variations.
As a result, it was found that optional variations of Korean noun-final consonants resulted from the following potential factors.
1) Differences in the variation aspects of Korean noun-final consonants might result from differences in the extent of completion in restructuring of stem.
2) Optional variations of Korean noun-final consonants might result from different aspects of neutralization rule application depending on position of word stress.
3) Phonetic conditions surrounding syllable might have potential effects on variations of Korean noun-final consonants.
4) Moreover, ‘semantic discrimination’, a function of Korean noun-final consonants, might have potential effects on different aspects of optional variation as well.
