Chinese famous scholar and artist Linyutang(林語堂) translated chinese famous novel(or essay) named Fushengliuji(浮生六記) into English. In the preface of this book, he said Chenyun(the heroine of this novel) was the most lovely woman that had ever appeared in chinese history of literature. It has inspired me to research the need and importance of the female characters in chinese literature especially in novels.
In this research, I focus on two similar characters of very similar two works, Lindaiyu(Hongloumeng) & Chenyun(Fushengliuji), and find their common characteristics. From these two women, I try to find some common and special characteristics reflecting the features of MingQing dynasty women. My approach to the subject is two ways. One is the study of women’s outward description, another is the study of women’s inner character description.
Moreover from this paper, we can understand the developing description of female figures in entire MingQing dynasty novels. For instance, in the beginning of the period, the description of female figures were very brief and negative and flat and abstract but gradually it comes to long and positive and perspective and realistic. So we can find very brilliant descriptions of female figures from Hongloumeng(紅樓夢) and Liaozhaizhiyi (聊齋志異) compared to Sanguoyanyi(三國演義) or Shuihuzhuan(水湖傳).
