Sayeokwon(司譯院), the national institute of foreign languages, was established for the purpose of good diplomatic relations with China in Chosun dynasty. It made lots of teaching materials for teaching Chinese, one of which was Wulunquanbeiyanjie(伍倫全備諺解). It is usually said that "Logeoldae(老乞大) & Paktongsa(朴通事): L&P" were the most widely used textbook, but we have the historical records that Wulunquanbeiyanjie was regarded as an important material by the officers of Sayeokwon and was also used as a teaching material in the mid 1500s. The value of Wulunquanbeiyanjie is as high as that of a series of L&P. The following three properties of Wulunquanbeiyanjie as a textbook can be referred. It fits with the purpose of teaching spoken Chinese in that period. It shows the adequacy and precision in phonetic notation. It contains various factors concerning Chinese language in its contents. Wulunquanbeiyanjie has just been used as a studying material of early modern Korean mainly by Korean linguists. It was not noticeable in studying Chinese so far. This book has translated the Chinese text in terms of Chinese linguistic, which not only could provide the basic material for syntax and vocabulary studying but also could be used in studying of modern spoken Chinese.
