This paper describes the recently adapted Yamaguchi Prefecture's basic policy for systematic bridge management activities which takes into account the ongoing cutbacks in the public investment and the present state of the bridge management in the prefecture. Under the basic policy, the essential bridge data for efficient maintenance planning was identified, and, because of the lack of periodic inspections, a routine inspection manual was created to collect information on the present state of the bridges in the prefecture. A method for determining the priority of bridge maintenance projects, which is thought to be a necessary indicator for maximizing efficiency within a limited budget, was also developed. This paper also introduces a bridge management database system and an inspection data input support system developed to make the policy feasible.
