Linkcube is a network of units stationed in public spaces in two international cities. The project allows people in remote locations to take pictures together at the same time. The Linkcube allows users to develop a personal connection with anonymous people from around the world and invites people at the two locations to sit for a very special bi-continental group portrait. Snapped simultaneously, the two images are then blended into a single picture. The resulting picture serves as a memento of the shared experience. The main study conducted with the LinkCube had the primary goal to develop a platform of participant's immersive telematic experience. Of special interest were the enhanced experiential qualities, its telematic characteristics for example any changes of perception to the spatiality of the space, but also to gain a general understanding of the range of experiences it created for participants.
This paper first discusses the related theoretical background and describes the ideas and techniques involved in the process of conceiving and making a telematic environment both as a piece of interactive art in its own right and as a playful system. The concept behind the project is presented, as well as hardware and software design.
