The Multiple Description Coding (MDC) generates two descriptions and transmits them over two independent channel. However, received descriptions occasionally include bit errors over noisy channels. Especially, the critical bits such as End of Block (EOB) of JPEG need to be protected from error-prone channels and bits error in variable length codes cause synchronization loss and error propagation.
In this paper, we propose MDC with Error Resilient Entropy Coding (EREC) model in order to protect the lost information and reduce bit error propagation in the communication. In our Algorithms, image is transformed to DCT coefficients and each of coefficients after quantization is transformed to descriptions by correlating transform. Those are compressed with entropy coding using Huffman coding. After process above, two descriptions are packed using EREC to transmit over noisy channel.
The simulation results show availability of the robustness of proposed model. This reason is due to EREC is working as a synchronization and the error propagation in EREC decoding more likely spreads to the back of each block than to the beginning of each block. Because, the variable length block bits are placed into fixed length slots of equal size.
