As part of a Technical Cooperation Agreement between the British and Korean Governments a small team of British and Korean geologists, the Anglo-Korean Mineral Exploration Group (AKMEG) were based in the Geological Survey of Korea and carried out fieldwork in Chungcheongbuk-do between 1971 and 1973. In the 1970s, the Republic of Korea already had a thriving geological community with both a Geological Survey and a Geological Society founded several decades previously and with five Universities having departments specialising in geology. Geological fieldwork in the early 1970s posed many problems that are not evident today; good roads were few, communications were poor and accommodation in rural areas was limited. However, there were some advantages as compared with current field conditions. Traversing the hills on foot was relatively easy as most were devoid of trees and undergrowth at a time when programmes of reforestation were only just beginning. Many small mines were operating giving access to interesting outcrops and underground information and the 1970s saw great progress in the geological mapping of Korea. This was a period when plate tectonic theory was first being applied to the interpretation of the geology of Korea and some of the great geological debates of the 1970s, such as that concerning the age and origin of the Okcheon Group, persist to the present day
