This work describes a switched capacitor based PWM circuit for on-chip LCD backlight controllers. In the proposed scheme, the ambient light sensor output is sampled into an RC network which the discharge time is proportional to the output voltage corresponding to the light level. In addition, a novel approach that can overcome the nonlinear relationship between the initial voltage of the RC network and the discharge time is proposed. Furthermore, by using a switched capacitor resistor with variable clock frequency, the RC time constant is programmable and less sensitive to process variations with respect to passive resistors. The proposed PWM generator circuit is designed using CMOS 1.2um technology, and the operation is verified through circuit level simulations.
