This paper analyzes housing consumption pattern of urban households with disabilities. Using data from Korean Welfare Panel Study(KWPS), household demographic and economic characteristics and housing consumption components are compared between households with and without disabilities. It is found that ages of household head are higher, the head’s education level and the family income and net wealth are lower for households with disabilities. These differences are well reflected in their housing consumption such as housing type, housing tenure, housing size, and housing facilities. A larger portion of households with disabilities relative to those without disabilities choose an inferior housing tenure such as Chonsei or monthly rent with variable deposit. They are more likely to live in multifamily housing and public housing. Housing size and the number of rooms are smaller for households with disabilities.
Empirical results show that households with disabilities are less likely to own, and the severer their disability, it is more likely to rent. The impact of household income on the probability of owning is higher for households with milder disability. Housing demand estimation results show that the income effect on housing demand is less for households with disabilities in the case of homeowners, but the effect is higher for households with disabilities in the case of tenants.
These results imply that income-earning capabilities should be improved in order to increase homeownership of households with disabilities. This implication is more evident for households with milder disabilities, which is consistent with empirical results of this paper. One way to improve their income-earning capabilities is to provide vocational rehabilitation services and to have them obtain quality-job opportunities. This can also improve their housing conditions in the end.
