This study searches for Caesar’ greatness of human dimension in Caesar and Cleopatra. Shaw’s attitude toward history is very near that which he has Caesar express regarding the library of Alexandria: books and the past are important only as they are meaningful in terms of the living. In working hard to prove his point Shaw deviates from the facts of the past and turns from realism to fantasy, but it is a fantasy an organic truth of its own which, though it may be idiosyncratic, sheds light on history and on history’s relationship to modern ethics and humanity. We may lose some of the historical Caesar in the alteration of details, but conventional history at best renders him only vaguely accessible to us as a man, a personal reality. Shaw seeks his personal reality in terms of its hint of a human hero; as this is set against historical fact, the bitter ironies are clearer, and the play gains in both artistic and philosophical force.
