In Troilus and Cressida, Shakespeare views the Trojan war legends very satirically as a pointless circulation of war and lechery. And Shakespeare’s cynical view is deeply highlighted in the main story of Troilus and Cressida’s love. Shakespeare retells and explicates the archetypal woman of falseness as it is told in the Troy legends in a context that constitutes a critic of stereotyping. Shakespeare’s Cressida plays the role of a cynical subject who acts in full understanding of women’s status as ‘sluttish spoils’. She deliberately entertains the possibility of falseness rather than to defend it passively. Thus, we can find through her character and role, a modern version of cynicism against the stereotyped male view of women’s frailty.
