Bioenergy produced from biomass resource have been used in the form of traditional fuels and are now being promoted as a strategy to achieve sustainable development. Different from fossil resources biomass is usually available locally, allows the widespread production of energy at resonable costs and can help to mitigate climate change, develop local and rural economies and increase energy security. Recently, several methods and tools have been developed to assess the availability of biomass resources. And the results are provided in the form of biomass (or bioenergy) resources map of specific region.
At first, we in this paper focus on the methods of preparing the bioenergy resources map at the resonal level subdivided by biomass type. Biomass resources potential are classified depending on their theoretical, techno-economical and sustainable availability and is described into map matching with local positions. And biomass resources are subdivided into woody biomass, agricultural biomass, municipal and industrial residues, and wet biomass including livestock manure, wastewater sludges etc. In addition, dedicated energy crops are also included a potetial resources.
Data for resouces map is obtained from biomass resources assessment, and methods of assessment can be classified in to the following 3 methods. They are remote sensing/GIS, modelling(static/numeric and dynamic/simulation modelling) and field/paper survey methods.
Secondly, we in this paper introduce the status of biomass resources mapping at several nations including US, EU, Mexico, Australia and Korea for comparison.
In conclusion we try to come up with a new prospects to improve existing biomass resources map of Korea for moe comprehensive presentation and effective use in bioenergy developments.
