Due to the law of waste material management in Korea and the London convention 96 protocol, it became a big issue to treat waste water sludge safely and economically not only in Korea but also in the world. According to the recent researches, making sludge to energy resources is the best way of sludge treatment.
Waste water sludge produced in ○○ area was collected and analyzed to see the possibility of energy resources. It was proven that this sludge had lots of potential of energy resource. Lee (2009) said that the success of recycle energy of sludge depended on the economic and ecologic drying method of sludge. Based on this research, full scale microwave sludge dryer was designed and manufactured in this research.
At first, 3.0㎾ microwave sludge dryer was developed to support the analysis of data from two small size ready-made microwaves used in lab. for sludge drying tests. And next, 7.5㎾ screw feeding microwave sludge dryer was developed to simulate and test sludge in the field. To tell the truth, this dryer produced not only many problems but also good solutions. These results made it possible to redesign and remanufacture the full scale microwave sludge dryer in this research.
The full scale microwave sludge dryer was born with many merits of 1) no axis of sludge moving system to make better injections of microwave to sludge, 2) belt conveyer moving system to move dried sludge at the end of dryer to exit, 3) individual on-and-off operating system of magnetron to increase economic efficiency, 4) in-and-out ventilation system to increase drying efficiency and 5) recycling of loosen energy using heat exchange system. Using this full scale dryer, six different cases were tested in the field to check the drying ability and efficiency of it.
According to the test results, it has approximately 2.43㎏/kWh of water drying ability. It is very high drying ability compared to the previous research of 1.0㎏/kWh (Lee 2009).
