Port transportation system is one of the major lifeline systems in modem society and its reliable operation is crucial for the well-being of the public. The main purpose of this study is to provide a methodology for estimating the effects of the earthquake on the performance of the port transportation system. To evaluate the economic loss of damaged system, an analytical framework is developed integrating simulation model for terminal operation and fragility curves of port components in the context of seismic risk analysis. For this purpose, firstly, fragility curves of port structures are developed. To investigate the effect of spatial variation of soil properties, digitally generated non-Gaussian, two-dimensional random fields are introduced for the backfill soil of the quay wall. Additionally, to investigate the effects of uncertainties in soil properties, Latin Hypercube Sampling (LHS) technique is applied in the numerical model of a pile¬supported wharf. Finally, to evaluate the seismic loss of port transportation system considering overall functionality of terminal system, computerized simulation model is developed and verified. Using the fragility curves of the wharf structure, physical damage of container terminal is demonstrated and then the decreased container throughput on the damaged system is assessed. This simulation-based loss estimation methodology can be used for estimating the monetary loss of port transportation system.
