Bumblebees are widely used to pollinate various greenhouse crops. The large bumblebee, Bombus terrestris, which is indigenous to Europe and used broadly for the pollination of high-value crops, has been artificially introduced in several regions of the world. An artificial hibernation is necessary for the year-round rearing of the bumblebee, which passes through one generation per year. In this study, we have attempted to determine whether or not, and how the cold time and period affect the artificial hibernation of the bumblebee queen, B. terrestris. In cold time regimes of 8 days, 12 days, 16 days, or 30 days after emergence under a constant temperature of 2.5℃ and a humidity of >70%, the queens that were stored at 8 days after emergence evidenced the highest survival rates: 93.1% at one month, 85.1% at two months, 75.0% at three months, and 50.9% at 5 months. Survival rates were reduced under conditions of storage at 12 days, 16 days, and 30 days after emergence. Colony developmental characteristics after diapause were 1.1- to 36.6- fold higher than those of queens stored at 12 days, 16 days, and 30 days after emergence. With regard to cold period, the queens that hibernated for at least 8 weeks evidenced optimal colony development rates. The rates of oviposition, colony foundation, and progeny-queen production of queens hibernated for 8 weeks were 83.8%, 34.6%, and 27.0%, respectively. These values correspond to 1.1- to 2.9-fold increases relative to the CO₂-treated queens. Therefore, 8 days after emergence and a cold period of at least 8 weeks were found, in this study, to be the most favorable cold time and period conditions for the diapause break in B. terrestris queens.
