In working toward an understanding of Internet sexually explicit materials, this articles is organized into three separate but interrelated major goals. First, I assess the degree of growth in youth's experience of sexually explicit materials. Second, I try to find antecedents of experience with sexually explicit materials on internet. This study assesses several individual, social environmental, and opportunity factors that induce youths to seek out such materials. Third, based on relevant theory and research, this study attempts to find the negative effects of exposure to sexually explicit materials on youth's sexual dispositions. attitudes, and behavior.
Using data from 1113 both male and female middle/high school students in Seoul, 2003, this study tries to figure out the experiences of youth about Internet sexual explicit materials and find antecedents and consequences of experience with such materials.
Results show that 60.2% of respondents have experience with exposure to sexual explicit materials. More male than female students encountered these materials(77.5 to 42.8). Most of exposures(78.8%) happened while the youth was using the Internet at home. 41.6% of respondents of experience with such materials was contacting in daytime. In addition, more than 30% have the first experience with such materials when they were elementary students.
This study finds that sex, age, sensation seeking disposition, attitudes to such materials, and computer using time have significant effects on experience with sexual explicit materials. That is, male and elder respondents have more contacts with such materials. In addition, those who have sensation seeking disposition, favorable attitudes toward sexual explicit materials, and more time to use computer are more likely to experience with such materials.
In explaining the effects of experience with sexual explicit material on youth's sexual delinquency, this study specifies several intervening variables such as sexual arousal, erotophilia, hostility toward opposite sex, and acceptance of rape myth, etc. However, the finding reports that the effect of experience with such material on sexual delinquency is not mediated by sex-related intervening variables and its effect is significantly direct. In addition, this study verifies that violent sexual explicit materials have more effect on increasing the level of sexual arousal, negative aspects of sexual or gender attitudes, and juvenile sexual delinquency.
The policy implications of those results are discussed.
