Report Errors

The purpose of this study was to analyze the news coverage of Korean economy by foreign and domestic press, from 1997 IMF period to global financial crises in 2008. For foreign press, US, British, Japanese and Chinese news media were selected, while Chosun and Hankyureh were selected for Korean press. The results indicated that foreign press focused on ‘general economic news’ such as GNP. unemployment rate, consumer price index, etc, while ‘Korean companies’ news was covered at the second place. While Korean press also focused ‘general economic news’ but on ‘industries news’ at the second. Regarding news sources, while ‘government officials’ was dominated, foreign press cited more sources per article than Korean one. Contrary to the expectation, Korean news media were more likely to cover Korean economy in terms of unfavorable perspective than foreign news media, which were consistently neutral-oriented. Same as crisisoriented news. Regarding ‘crisis cause’ frame, while both foreign and Korean media pointed out external factor, ‘global economic situation,’ the solution from both was that Korean government policy should change according to the global economic situation. The implication of the findings were discussed.
